How to Update a Wardrobe Inexpensively

How to Update a Wardrobe Inexpensively

Looking like you just purchased a brand new wardrobe doesn't necessarily mean going out and one. You can update a wardrobe inexpensively with a couple of creative tricks, mixing and matching a few new items.

Things You'll Need:

Creativity

Willingness to experiment

Fashion sense

A few new items

Step
1

Assess what you have. Most women's closets are stuffed with items they may not have even ever worn. Dig to the depths and pull out everything you have.

Step
2

Try new combinations. If you've always worn the same grey skirt with the same blue sweater, mix it up a bit. Try to the blue sweater with the black slacks, the grey skirt with the fuchsia blouse or the fuchsia blouse with the black slacks.

Step
3

Get a few new inexpensive accessories. Costume jewelry works well for adding a new twist to an old standby, as does a variety of handbags, vests or inexpensive yet notable shoes.

Step
4

Do like the French: Invest in fashionable scarves in glorious print or vibrant colors. They can be worn as belts, headbands or around the neck to add new pizzazz to an old outfit.

Tips & Warnings

Shop thrift stores. Here you can find some unique items for lower prices than the arm and a leg department store.

If you must spend a lot on a new item, say a winter jacket or expensive suit, make sure it's in a classic shape and a color. This way when your new item is old, you can update it with the above suggestions, perhaps even mixing and matching the suit pieces with your grey skirt and blue sweater.

Sundresses are tricky to update, but can be done with belts, sweaters and T-shirts worn beneath or sweaters thrown on top.

List all the tops, bottoms and jackets you have in your closet, then write down various combinations. Type A personalities may even want to make little cut outs of the items to place together.

Don't despair. Most women can't afford a new wardrobe every season.

Don't be afraid to experiment. Most likely you're the only one who notices what you're wearing anyway.
